Wines of South Africa at the Cape Bottle Room – 4:30pm Early Seating

South Africa is perhaps the most exciting and dynamic wine producing region today.  Their industry has been set back in the consumers’ mind by a sea of poorly made Pinotage (we’re only going to taste 1 Pinotage), but when you penetrate the surface and seek out the cult producers the story is much different.  Despite a winemaking tradition dating back to the 1600’s, and an ideal climate and soil for wine production, the industry was essentially reduced to 1 Co-op during the years of Apartheid (post WW2 till the mid-90’s).  However, old vines survived, and when an exciting wave of young winemakers starting re-discovering these old vines a renaissance has occurred.  Syrah that can rival the Northern Rhone, Pinot Noir that can rival Burgundy, Chenin Blanc that keeps up with the Loire, Bordeaux blends that can age gracefully, are just some of the treasures we’ll discover.

Fun fact, there are more ‘old vineyards’ (35+ years) in South Africa than total acreage in Texas, and that is something to celebrate.

ABOUT THE IMBIBE SERIES

IMBIBE means to consume or absorb – and that’s exactly what you’ll do in our classes… consume and absorb wine, food, and knowledge.

We host about two IMBIBE classes each month – usually on Wednesdays or Thursdays. These classes are a great way to learn, and engage with other like-minded members of our community.  We have a variety of highly knowledgeable professionals who impart great information, and usually a few good laughs, too!
