Mark Rashap has long professed that the BEST way to learn about wine is by tasting comparatively 2 or more wines with the goal of highlighting a particular lesson. By tasting the same grape from 2 different regions and understanding the differences of growing conditions or winemaking, the subtle variations of flavor that would normally be hard to identify are amplified. And, from there, we can extrapolate many lessons on what we like or prefer from wines going forward.
In this class, we’ll look at 2 different varieties, Sangiovese and Dry Riesling, and compare them from drastically different regions. For Riesling it will be Mosel vs the Reinhessen, and for Sangiovese, it will be Chianti vs. Montalcino. As always, we’ll get into the nitty gritty of what makes these regions distinct, how to identify the flavors that result, and how to use that knowledge for wine selections in the future.
Wines:
Louis Guntrum Dry Riesling – $16.25
Dr. Hermann Riesling Trocken – $19.99
Capanna Rosso di Montalcino – $29.99
Bindi Sergardi La Boncia Chianti – $18.75
